March 28, 2015 our district meeting will be held at Post 2100 Everett. This is our Memorial Service. The District Chaplin, Jim Raymond, will need a list of all your deceased members that have died since March 1, 2014 and February 28, 2015. Jim has requested the list be sent to him no later than March 14, 2015 at:
P.O. Box 1352
Granite Falls, WA. 98252
Section 217 of the Manual of Procedure requires that nominations of Post officers shall open in March and remain open until the Post is ready to vote. The Section goes on to say the Post elections will be held in April and officers will take office following Department’s Convention which is held in June. It is critical that your Post Election Report be completed as soon as Post elections are held in April. John Hamilton, Adjutant General, requests that you submit your reports online using the Online Membership System (OMS). By doing so, a copy of the report will be sent to the email address of the person completing the report and Department HQ’s. Please submit a copy to District as well. Even if there is no change in your officers from year to year, the election report is still required to be submitted annually. Failure to submit the report by June 1st can result in the Post’s Charter being revoked.
Department announced that next year’s youth essay theme will be
“Why is America My Favorite Country?”
National has also announced their themes:
Themes for Voice of Democracy are “My Vision for America” while the Patriots Pen theme will be “What Freedom Means to Me”.
It’s not too early to let your teachers and schools know the themes so they can build them into their curriculum for next year.
On March 21st from 7-10am, Post 9417 is hosting a pancake feed. The suggested donation is $5 but I’m sure they’ll happily take more. This is also an opportunity to get to know our Comrades on the eastern frontier of District 1 so mark your calendars.
On January 20th, the Edmonds City Council approved the design concept for Veterans Plaza. Above is the Memorial Wall with waterfalls segmenting a granite wall. Each segment will feature a branch of the service. The design was selected from a number of submissions of ideas from around the country and even one from Mexico. SiteWorkshop of Seattle was chosen unanimously by the committee who has been meeting since last summer. Committee members are made up of members of VFW Post 8870, American Legion Post 66 and members from the community including a wide representation of various interests.
At the BSA Cub Scout Pack 331 Blue and Gold banquet held at Edmonds United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 28th, VFW Post 1040 awarded the Scouting Spirit & leadership award to Webelos Cub Scouts Dirk Smith & Justin Hecox. AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization. You can choose from nearly one million organizations to support.
I grabbed the above description off the Amazon website. I know I spend far too much money at Amazon but, then again, I rarely end up at the Mall. I signed up for Amazon Smile and selected Puget Sound Honor Flight for the charity I wished to support. Every purchase I make will give Honor Flight .5% of the amount spent. Painless, easy, and a great way to help out a good cause. Thanks to Marty Spani who pointed it out to me.
I’d like to add each Post’s website, Facebook, and other social media to our listing of meetings. In addition, I think they should be added to our next District Directory. I attended Post 1561’s meeting and found out they had updated their website http://vfw1561.org and it is very well done. I know that Sultan Post 2554 also has a nice website and Facebook presence. My Post, 8870 in Edmonds, has a good website but we are a bit weak in the social media area. 1040 has a website and a Facebook page. If your Post needs a hand in setting up a website or social media page, please let District know and we will see if we can give you a hand. If you do have a website, make sure you update it frequently. There is nothing like going to a website and seeing meeting information that is a month old.
Same time and place unless indicated below. See the listing from the links on left sidebar.
If you change the date or time of your meeting, please let both District and Department know of the change.
